AFRICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Reunion Island on the track in Mauritius

Reunion Island has got the "exceptional" green light from the Confederation of African Athletics for participation in the continental championships, from June 8 to 12, in Mauritius.

 

This is a first time for this island, which is a French department in the Indian Ocean.

So, forty-four (44) countries appear, as of March 16, 2022, on the list of entries for the 22nd African Senior Championships. These are, in addition to Reunion Island, Mauritius, Madagascar, Benin, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Congo, Togo, Liberia, Lesotho, Algeria, South Africa, Comoros, Djibouti, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Ghana, Gabon, DR Congo, Cape Verde, Chad, Angola, Seychelles, Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Tunisia, Zimbabwe, Libya, Morocco, Malawi, Sudan, Tanzania , Botswana, Cameroon.

Ten (10) countries out of the 54 members of CAA have not yet confirmed their participation. These are: the Gambia, Mali, Zambia, Central Africa Rep, Eritrea, Burundi, Sao Tome and Principe, Equatorial Guinea, Swaziland and Mauritania.

On the other hand, the participation of Uganda was rejected for technical reasons. But, these countries still have the possibilities for entry, because the Confederation of African Athletics has set May 2 as the closing date for final entries.

The president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, is the distinguished guest of the Mauritian edition.
