A memorable day for Cameroon, which, at the same time as CAA President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum was laid to rest in Yaoundé, distinguished itself brilliantly in Accra by propelling its two sons, Emmanuel Eseme and Hervege Kole Etam, to the pinnacle of African sprinting. The late head of African athletics was indeed a brilliant sprinter before enjoying a remarkable administrative and military career.
Emmanuel Eseme won gold in the men's 100m at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana, clocking an exceptional time of 10.25 seconds. This is another triumph for Eseme on this same track where he won the 100m title at the last African Games.
South African Bradley Nkoana won silver, while Nigerian Chidera Nzeakor completed the podium with bronze.
His compatriot Hervege Kole Etam, a resident athlete at the Dakar AADC Center, was crowned queen of the 100m sprint, clocking a time of 11.48 seconds, ahead of Nigerian Rosemary Chukwum (who finished in a photo finish) (11.48) and Liberian Thema Davis (11.50).
Gold for Nigeria! Tobi Amusan brilliantly won the women's 100m hurdles final, securing her fourth African title in 12.83 seconds. Nigeria achieved a one-two finish thanks to Adaobi Tabugbo's bronze medal.
Just minutes after this victory, the Nigerian team won its second gold medal, triumphing in the 4x400m mixed relay. The quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson, and Patience Okon-George crossed the finish line in 3:16.41.
South African Luvo Mayonga won the long jump with a leap of 8.15 meters. Senegal's Lys Mendy became the African vice-champion with a jump of 8.07 meters, while his compatriot Amath Faye took home the bronze with a jump of 8.00 meters.
Ivory Coast's Nicolas Huys became the decathlon champion in Accra.
