Having not competed outdoors since the beginning of the year, the focus was on triple jumper Hugues-Fabrice Zango for these African Championships in Côte d'Or. On June 4, the bronze medalist of the Tokyo Olympic Games reassured by signing an impressive 17.09m at Andujar, Spain.
Hugues-Fabrice Zango pointed to the Mauritian rendez-vous as favorite for the African title, thanks to his 17.09m. And the Burkinabé did not disappoint. Actually, despite the unfavorable weather conditions like a strong wind and intermittent rain, he jumped 17.34 (3.5 m / s) at his first attempt to literally kill the competition.
Hugues-Fabrice Zango was the only one to jump over 17 meters in the final. His runner-up, Botswana's Thalosang Tshireletso, jumped 16.77m (4.5 m/s), while the Algerian Yasser Triki finished third with 16.58 (2.6 m/s).
On this fourth day, South Africa has achieved the first triple of these Championships in the women’ javelin final where Jo-Ann Van Dyk (60.65m) took the gold medal as her compatriots Mckyla Van Der Westhuizen (55.55m) and Jana Van Schalkwyk (54.49m), finshed second and third.
In the men’ pole vault final, Algeria took the African title and the silver medal with Medhi Rouana (5.30m) and Hichel Cherabi (5.20m). South Africa’s Hendrick Van Wyck won the bronze medal with 4.90m.
