The first title goes to South Africa’s Ischke Senekal
South Africa won its first title of this twenty-second edition of the African Championships with Ischke Senekal in the women's shot put. She did a throw at 16.40m in her fifth attempt to seize the African Graal. Gabon’s Carine Meka, who led the competition until the third attempt, took the silver medal with 15.97m. The other South African, Zonica Lindeque, completed the podium with 15.79m.
Abraha Megos Tumay won the men's 10,000m final, stopping the clock at 29:19.01 in a tactical race. His teammate Chimdesa Debele finished second with 29:22.74, allowing Ethiopia to achieve the first double of these Championships. Kenya's Abraham Longosiwa won bronze, and thus the first Kenyan medal, by completing the 25-lap race in 29:23.02.
"The most important today was to bring the title to Ethiopia, no matter which one of us would cross the finish line as the winner. Fortunately, it was me. I am very happy with this title, which I share with all my teammates in the 10,000m," said Abraha Megos Tumay.
In the last final of the day, the men's hammer, South Africa stricked again. This time through Alan Cumming, author of a throw of 69.13m, at his sixth attempt. He precedes respectively his compatriot Tshepang Makhete (68,75m) and Egypt’s Alaa El-Din El-Ashry (68,24m).
